Student Awards Competition

Students who have submitted abstracts to SIMS 23 will be contacted by the Organizing Committee and asked if they would like to participate in the Student Award Competition in advance of the conference.  Students who make the best oral or poster presentations during the conference will be considered for one of the following two award types.

Rowland Hill Awards

The Rowland Hill Awards are sponsored by Ionoptika in honor of Rowland Hill who made seminal developments in SIMS instrumentation.  Awards will be conferred to students who are deemed by the judges to have provided the best presentations related to SIMS research.  Four awards will be given in the amount of $500 each.

  • Karolin Bomhardt, Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, “Surface Properties of Ionic Liquids: A Mass Spectrometric View Based on Soft Cluster-Induced Desorption”
  • Svenja-Katharina Otto, Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, “In Situ Investigation of Lithium Metal–Solid Electrolyte Anode Interfaces with ToF-SIMS”
  • Alfred Fransson, University of Gothenburg, “Investigation of Changes in the Cell Envelope of E. coli Mutants with a Deficient Conjugation Efficiency Using TOF-SIMS”
  • Matija Lagator, University of Manchester, “Effects of Reactive Gas Cluster Ion Beams on Yields and Matrix Effects in SIMS”

2022 Honorable Mention

  • Benjamin Tomasetti, Université Catholique de Louvain (co-author stand-in), “In Situ Matrix Enhanced Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry for Tissue Analysis”
  • Yuhong Jin, The Francis Crick Institute, “Orbi-SIMS Imaging of the Developing Drosophila Brain”

Biointerphases Awards

The Biointerphases Awards are sponsored by the AVS journal Biointerphases.  Awards will be conferred to students who are deemed by the judges to have provided the best presentations related to biological or biomaterial SIMS research.  Two awards will be given in the amount of $500 each.
